Kelimutu is not a particularly big Indonesian volcano. What he is famous for are the three crater lakes, resting on its shoulders. They are all of different colors and change them constantly, from green to red and brown. This and the surrounding mist gave the place its ghostly appearance. Legend is that the souls of the deceased go to rest in one of the lakes, based on their deeds during life. Another, just as good explanation is that the colors change because volcanic gases trigger chemical reactions inside of the minerals in said lakes. Nonetheless they are beautiful, unique and famous.
