10 Strange And Creepy Creatures You Probably Haven't Heard About

Striped Hyena

All four members of the Hyena family are creepy to look at. They are not quite dogs, nor cats, they are unique. Their feeding habits involve scavenging for animal remains after a bigger predator already had its share. They are the cleanup crew of the nature. The Striped Hyena in particular is smaller than the other three.  Its muzzle, ears and throat are big, thick and entirely black, which gives it this distinctive slightly scary look. Their front legs are much longer than the hind ones, the hyenas are walking in a somewhat funny manner but this doesn't mean they are not agile when needed. Oh yes, their bite is also mighty strong.

Marabou Stork

The Marabou Stork looks nothing like the storks we know and love. And it certainly doesn't carry babies. In fact it is a scavenger bird, feeding on corpses and even other, alive birds. He has been known to eat flamingos, ouch. Marabou Storks are quite big as well, 5 feet tall and with a wingspan of 10 feet(this is more than 3 meters). They can look elegant when in flight but once they hit the ground you can see how ugly they truly are, with their bald red heads. These storks inhabit Africa, south of Sahara and are called "undertaker birds" because of their habits.

Brookesia Micra

Chameleons are not particularly pretty, their only somewhat redeeming quality is the bright colors they can assume. Not this one though, the thing is so small it doesn't even need a disguise to blend into the leaves. This chameleon is miniature, 29 millimeters, so small it can sit on a match without a problem. It is found in Madagascar and is the definitive smallest chameleon, and one of the smallest lizards in the world. Pay special attention to its creepy eyes, they are known to hypnotize people.

Bilby

The Bilby is truly weird. Think of a rabbit-kangaroo hybrid, or even better - a rabbit-eared bandicoot. Its ears and nose are big, which provide it with excellent hearing and smell at the cost of a poor eyesight. It is a nocturnal animal and likes to dig up tunnels. Its diet includes everything, from fruits and seeds to small animals. The Great Bilby, the largest Bilby family member, is known to be quite large, 55 centimeters and 2.5 kilograms. They used to be quite widespread across Australia, but human intervention dwindled their numbers. Some people think they are cute, others are rightfully scared by them.

Lobster Moth

It is quite an ordinary moth. At first. After its creepy larvae grows up. When you see it on a leaf you'll understand why - it looks like a lobster instead of a caterpillar, even more so when it feels threatened! Its creepy look are not the only thing, which keeps it from being eaten. The Lobster Moth's larvae can also shoot acid at you! It is widely spread across Europe and Asia, so there is a high chance to see it in action someday.

Red-lipped Batfish

The name speaks for itself - it is a fish that looks like a bat and has red lips. Living 30 meters underwater near the Galapagos Islands, the Batfish does not only look strange but also functions very weirdly. For example, it is not a good swimmer, so it prefers walking on the ocean floor thanks to its pectoral fins. Furthermore, once the fish becomes an adult it can use its dorsal fin to attract prey. They are about 40 centimeters long, very creepy and used to eating other small fish and shrimps.

Long-Wattled Umbrellabird

This was a mouthful, but the bird truly deserves its bizarre name. The crest on its head curiously resembles a hair, a very well known and badass hairstyle indeed. But this is not the only peculiarity. It also has a very long wattle, or a rod, made out of feathers on its chest. It can reach 45 centimeters in length and has to be seen to be believed. Only males are known to have these interesting assets and they use them to full effect during mating. The wattle then becomes something like a pine cone, it is truly disturbing. The Umbrellabird lives in Colombia and Ecuador.

Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko

Another weird animal from Madagascar. Why it is called satanic? Perhaps because of its little horns, red eyes and sinister smile. Other than that though it is just a small lizard, who likes disguising itself as leafs. It can not only look like part of a plant, it can also make certain parts of its body look rotten for more credibility, it is amazing. Well, this didn't help the Satanic Gecko and eventually it was discovered and turned into a profitable pet, although most of the dealings regarding it are strictly illegal.

Bat-Eared Fox

There is something quite special about big ears and black muzzle, they make the animal creepy! It is a similar case for the Bat-eared Fox, its ears are 13 centimeters tall and are good not only for hearing but also for keeping its body cool in the scorching African savannah. It lives in groups, containing 2-5 individuals. Its favorite activities include hunting for termites during the night and sleeping during the day, although when the climate is less extreme it switches its patters and becomes a diurnal animal. The Bat-Eared Fox is 55 centimeters long and has been around for some time, fossils show that they appeared 800 000 years ago.

Turtle Frog

You wouldn't believe this is a frog honestly, it looks like a turtle with its shell removed. Turtle Frogs live in Australia, in South-East Australia to be exact. Their limbs are short and muscular, another thing that differentiates them from regular frogs. They burrow into the sandy soil, which gives them some adaptability when it comes to more arid climates. They can even survive without a free standing water. Their body is round, 45 millimeters long and their diet includes insects, but mostly termites.
