5 Things You Should Not Do At Work

- 8 years ago by

Whilst some of them may seem like common sense to you, others are pretty serious and will probably make you think about it. The sooner you absorb their deeper meaning, the better.

Most employees tend to forget that they were hired to do work, not to work among doing other meaningless things. Although, some things people do unintentionally, it can ruin the discipline in the office. Moreover, some behaviors are considered a  violation of the company policy. So, before you find yourself in deep trouble, try to pay more attention on your tasks and stay away from time-wasting activities.

These are the Top 5 bad behaviors every employee must control at work.

#1 Be careful when using the company WI-FI

Most employers allow their employees to connect their smart-phone devices with the company Wi-Fi. Sure, this is beneficial. Although you have to know that once you' ve connected your iPhone, iPad or laptop to your company 's network they might gain access to your personal data. Yes, you should take notice of that. Many employees love exchanging selfies over the social media during work. This set a very bad example and may question your authority. And avoid sending personal messages through the company e-mail.

#2 Avoid bringing smelly food for lunch

You may enjoy eating garlic-flavoured salads or sandwiches with onions but this kind of food is smelly and no one around will like the smell coming from across the room. It can be utterly irritating, but more important is that smell distracts people from their work and you don't want to do that. The good news is that you don't have to cancel your lunch. Just go to the cafeteria nearby and eat there. If you order in a group, that's a different story. It's OK when the others are eating smelly food, too. In this case, there is nothing to worry about.

#3 Make friendships, not enemies

Loopholes can be found in every company's policy. However, that doesn’t mean that you can see them as opportunity to betray your manager or colleagues. Backstabbing is the worst way to get a promotion. It only brings momentary success. Challenge yourself professionally, aim for higher position but do it the right way. Remain honest and hard-working. Eventually you will prove your talent and achieve your goals. You can use open door policies to report a bad behavior, or violation of the ethical principles of the company, or major department problems. Remember that success is all about the relationships you build so don't do anything that might burn any bridges. It's important that people know who you are and feel positive about you and your work. That is how you might get recommendations by establishing authority. Stay away from people that are not reliable and trustworthy but don't lose connections with them. You don't know when you might happen to need them. Betraying your co-workers is really asking for trouble. Be careful with gossiping, too. It can also affect your relations at work.

#4 Not a good idea to send job applications from an office computer

That is the stupidest thing one can do but it does happen surprisingly often. No one will blame you for deciding to look for a better job. However,  the office is hardly the place to write a cover letter and prepare your resume, not to mention that anyone can see what you are doing and soon enough the news will be spread around. The worst thing that could happen is to ruin your relationship with your boss. As a result, you may lose your current job before you find another one. Be careful, apply for other jobs only from your personal computer when it is connected to your home network.

#5 Don’t complain about life, the job, the co-workers, the manager, the company

There are times that we have a lot on our plate but that doesn't give us a reason to complain wildly about personal issues. You might be feeling the most miserable person on earth but keep it to yourself as least while you are at work. Moreover, It's extremely unprofessional to complain about your colleagues or to question your manager's decisions. There is a good reason why he or she is on this post, not you, so if you have any problems about it, better deal with them as early as possible. Some employees dare to complain about the company they work for. Such behavior may put a black mark against the brand, damaging its social prestige. Under no circumstances should you reveal any information regarding your company, especially when it is put in dire straits. This is not about politeness, it is about loyalty. Next time you are about to say something bad about your organization remember the saying “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you”.
